Summer Stays – The Amalfi Coast

This pretty coastline is a scenic, artistic and culinary delight in Southern Italy.

South from chaotic and fascinating Naples, the Amalfi Coast – and the three island outposts of Capri, Ischia and Procida – have become an essential stay for tourists during the summer.

As one drives around the coast, you can see the expanse of natural beauty with the rugged coastline and blue sea and the mountains serving as a backdrop. Spring and autumn,  are wonderful in this region – spring for its swathes of bright wildflowers and autumn for warm seas and bountiful seasonal produce including mushrooms, black truffles and chestnuts.

Citrus fruits are a delight too, especially lemon or what they call “limone”.Quaint towns among the coast make up the topography, each having their own distinct Italian flavour and charm. Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi are the coastal gems and Ravello is ideal for the mountain lover. If one wants a view of  the glitz and glamorous, then Capri is the ideal place, strewn with some of the best hotels in the world and luxury brands.

This place is ideal for every tourist, from the honeymooners to families to backpackers. Each one can find their own niche with the diverse coastline.

If one wants to experience true luxury, then Amalfi will provide it. It serves some of the most high end hotels, and is true luxury.

Some of the highlights of the Amalfi Coast are:

Sorrento: The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is a must to stay in the coastal town of Sorrento. This particular place is full of quaint restaurants and shops. It also has a very cute train to go around and about the town. Sorrento sits pretty on a cliff gazing out at Vesuvius, and there’s a charming fishing village down below.

Positano: Of all the coastal towns, Positano is one of the most charming places to stay with its colourful houses and steep geography. If you’re looking for a celestial, Amalfian fairytale try Le Sirenuse, an 18th Century palazzo converted into a beautiful 60 room hotel with Michelin starred restaurant and a pool terrace wonderfully scented by lemon trees. Magical and romantic.It also has a wonderful shop housing some really good clothes and accessories such as Pucci. 

Capri: Perfect place for the glitz and glam. Whitewashed walls with a path leading to a terraced countryside. Housing some of the best brands in the world and leading hotels, this place is a must vista. Accessible by water, this place is surreal. The most dazzling of the islands, Capri is amuse visit. Capri Palace Hotel and Spa is the place to stay.

Ravello:A hilltop garden paradise, Ravello is famous for its music festival and incomparably swish hotels. Ravello distinguishes itself from the rest as it in the mountains with beautiful views and the most relaxed vibe. The place to stay is the luxurious Belmond Hotel Caruso, a former 11th century palace set on the cliffs.

The cuisine is predominately Italian and not much variety of other cuisines. Feast on the seafood, spaghetti and pizzas to your delight. A sea cruise or taking a ferry is a must. 

You can get to Amalfi via Naples as it is an hour and a half away, by renting a car of using public transport. 

Get ready to get lost and found in the Amalfi Coast….
